How To Clean Leather Garments At Home

Published On: 14 February 2022Categories: News

Leather has been a generational go between smart and casual, bridging the gap between something you can wear to the office and continue to wear on your Friday night happy hour with your colleagues after hours.

The oil that gives these garments their “glossy” appearance can also be the downfall to the lifespan of these garments. Washing at home with traditional detergents can remove the oils, weaken the fabrics and leave them vulnerable to tearing and being deeply spoiled by stains.

We recommend a regular Dry Cleaning schedule from our Mrlbourne, Australia based leather cleaning services to help prolong your investment with these types of leather garments.

However, that doesn’t mean to say that you can’t keep your favourite leather garments freshly cleaned in appearance at home in between professional Master Dry Cleaning visits.

Here are some tips to help keep your leather garments clean and fresh at home.

Leather Loves Dust

Leather, whether it be treated or untreated, loves to attract dust! That is due to its waterproof nature, which makes it perfect for a stain free appearance, but unfortunately the trade off is a walking dust magnet, especially if stored incorrectly.

A simple damp cloth or duster will eliminate the accumulated dust and dirt from your garment in between Dry Cleaning visits to keep your leather garments looking their best.

Create Your Own Home Cleaning Solution

There are a huge amount of “how to” videos and articles online that share the “perfect” home leather cleaning solution. Although we do not recommend following anything outside of our professional Master Dry Cleaning Leather procedures in store, it can be useful to mix a very mild 1 part soap x 1 part vinegar and gently clean your garment of any stains that are outside of your Dry Cleaning schedule. As with any homemade solutions, we do recommend testing on a small area of the garment first prior to committing to a full clean.
